Mallacoota District Health and Support Services (MDHSS) is a regional community-based organisation committed to      supporting older Australians and vulnerable population through in-home and lifestyle services tailored to their assessed needs. Our mission is to promote independence, safety, and wellbeing through responsive, client-focused care. We are now seeking a skilled Environmental Officer to enhance our environmental performance and lead sustainable practices within our operations, including food and kitchen safety.

Position Summary:

As our Environmental Officer, you will play a key role in evaluating and improving our environmental impact, overseeing compliance with health and environmental standards, and managing food safety systems within our in-home meals and kitchen services. This hands-on role combines environmental management with responsibilities as Food Supervisor, including kitchen oversight, food delivery coordination, and direct interaction with clients and vulnerable people to support their health and wellbeing through safe, nutritious meal services in a remote area.

Key Responsibilities:

                          Environmental Officer Duties:

      • Conduct environmental audits and risk assessments across MDHSS’s facilities and home support environments.
      • Develop and implement environmental management systems and sustainability initiatives related to food services for vulnerable populations in a remote area.
      • Ensure compliance with relevant environmental and health regulations.
      • Prepare technical reports, improvement plans, and compliance documentation.
      • Advise management and staff on best environmental practices and food services for vulnerable populations.

                          Food Supervision and Kitchen Management:

      • Act as the designated Food Safety Supervisor for MDHSS in compliance with Victorian Food Safety Program requirements.
      • Oversee operations of the MDHSS kitchen and in-home meals program.
      • Supervise preparation, storage, and distribution of meals to clients.
      • Implement and monitor food safety plans.
      • Conduct regular food safety audits and maintain accurate food safety records and logs.
      • Train and supervise kitchen staff in safe food handling and environmental health practices.

                         Client Engagement:

      • Coordinate food delivery services with tailored dietary needs for clients.
      • Work directly with clients and vulnerable people to assess satisfaction, feedback, and individual support needs.
      • Support holistic wellbeing by integrating environmental health into care plans and service delivery.

     Selection Criteria:

                          Essential:

      • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environments, Environmental Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Management, or equivalent.
      • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience in environmental consulting or environmental health.
      • Strong understanding of environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks in Australia.
      • Demonstrated ability to manage environmental risks and implement sustainability practices.
      • Experience in food safety or kitchen supervision in a regulated environment.
      • Excellent communication and reporting skills.
      • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

                          Desirable:

      • Certificate in Food Safety Supervision or equivalent training.
      • Valid driver’s licence.
